About ummsbiaus

ummsbiaus is an experimental multidisciplinary artist, native of Kyïv, working in the field of music and visual art. In her creations, rich in symbolism and ephemeral textures, electronic and natural elements form a beautiful symbiosis. The new track, “Ruzhi / Roses”, is the first bloom from FLORA, the upcoming Ukrainian folktronic album, created in the form of a sonic herbarium. Written for a female choir, this song grows slowly, fragile at first, yet full of thorns by the end. FLORA will be the continuation of the album FAVNA, released in 2024. ummsbiaus is not only about music: it's about the idea of combining all possible forms of art to evoke feelings on different levels of perception.

FAVNA

Release date: 22.11.2024
Genre: post-apocalyptic pastoral

FAVNA is a polyphonous electronic hymn of female power, embodied in water, flame, earth and air. It celebrates femininity through legends of Old Slavic goddesses and mythological creatures, singing of their strength and vulnerability. The album as a whole delves into the fauna of a female artist, incarnated in the figure of Syryna the Firebird, exploring the haunting echoes of her pains and struggles.

We all are different in our nature and form, yet we exist within the same fauna.

ummsbiaus x Mykola Leontovych: Water Nymph’s Easter

For the day of the Water Nymph’s Easter, Old Ukrainian pagan Midsummer eve, I’ve created my first mix for Mystictrax show on 20ft Radio, where ethereal water and forest nymphs thrive in their sisterhood. Since I started working with sounds in my musical theatre, 10 years ago, I’ve been drawing inspiration from various Ukrainian artists. In this mix, you will hear excerpts from a legendary Ukrainian opera by Mykola Leontovych «Na Rusalchyn Velykden» (on the Water Nymphs Easter) mixed together with released and upcoming tracks by ummsbiaus, and her songs from the collaborative project with Difference Machine 𓆦

Come through these carved gates, I invite you to the world of my flora and fauna 𓆤

Hydroelectric Suite No. 4, Op. 9

Release date: 24.01.2025
Genre: industrial folk

Being under constant attacks, Ukraine's energy system is fighting its own battle to bring power to millions of Ukrainians and provide the basic need that people outside Ukraine usually take for granted: electricity. A modern-day cornerstone, the lack of which causes a total reframing of any human activity. Hydroelectric Suite No. 4, Op. 9 is another attempt to remind the world about the genocide still ongoing in Ukraine.

Metro Suite No. 3, Op. 7

Release date: 09.08.2024
Genre: industrial, ambient

A solemn polyphony of liminal spaces, portals, and tunnels: this is the underground suite in four movements, a subsurface distant hum, accompanied by the clacking of wheels moving over the track and the pounding of a turbulent, restless heartbeat. Through the gate into the unknown, Kyïvites dive to the bottom of the hectic city with bated breath. The Kyïv Metro is more than just a means of transport. It is a separate world, with its own legends and sounds. There, you will hear music by street musicians. The Kyïv Metro is the biggest and safest shelter in the city. It’s a boundless space where you, protected from above-ground dangers, shrouded in the scent of the damp subway, and wrapped in the lights of oncoming trains, can blend into the crowd and become one with the hustling city.

𐌌

This suite was entirely written and produced within four days. It is based on field notes recorded in the Kyïv underground in July 2024 by ummsbiaus. Samples used for tracks 02 and 03 were specifically recorded at the eponymous stations, including vocals, and are accompanied by synth melodies performed on Arturia Microfreak.

ENERHOMOR

Best album 2023 (SLUKH media):

“Enerhomor makes your whole body tremble with fear. With her music, ummsbiaus depicts the period of the Ukrainian blackouts of 2022-2023: the lack of electricity, water and heat, the expectation of the unknown, frustration, the roar of drones and the whistle of rockets. On the album, the producer used field sounds recorded partly at the beginning of the war in the suburbs of Kyïv and partly abroad. For example, the long-lasting sound on the track LEP, which resembles a violin, is a processed sample of the grinding of an old rusty gate in the city of Bar, Montenegro”.

“This is an experimental electronic album with a gentle and at the same time eerie voice that sometimes arises. It keeps you in suspense from beginning to end: piercing scraping, the noise of an overheated transformer, distant knocking, echoes of incomprehensible sounds - this electronic-synthetic dissonance evokes a premonition of something terrible but inevitable”. – SLUKH media

Best album 2023 (A Closer Listen):

“Enerhomor captures electrical sounds from the outskirts of Kyïv in the early days of the russian invasion, incorporating them in a harrowing electronic frame. The Kakhovka HPP, released three months later, is a frightening drone that addresses the demolition of the Kakhovka Dam. Capping the year, ummsbiaus released Snovyda Suite No. 1, Op. 4, a reflection of the sleep cycle, ending in a nightmare. The nation is not safe, and as a result, neither is this music”.

“The EP is populated by ghosts. The tracks are brief, and occasionally she sings, as if it is unsafe to remain in one place for too long as the bombs are falling. The music yields a post-apocalyptic tone, despite the fact that it is unfolding right now”. – A Closer Listen

Enerhomor ↯ Energy Genocide mix by ummsbiaus

In this sound performance, you will hear remixed and remastered versions of tracks from the Enerhomor project by ummsbiaus first released on Mystictrax in March 2023. Based on the sounds of electricity (electricity meters, power stations, and electricity transformers) and multiple industrial noises (metro hum, ticking of traffic lights, machinery noises, and sounds of war), it aims to draw attention to the destructive shelling of the Ukrainian energy system, unceasingly committed by russia.

This music represents the past and present ummsbiaus, combining multiple field recordings and vocal tracks from the previous two years, along with two special songs from her upcoming solo album, which you can hear at the end of this performance. It is dedicated to Kyïv: to its humming sighs, its noisy rumbles, its machinery rattlings, its distant laughter… To its citizens who make the heart beat faster.

Special thanks for remastering and eternal support to Difference Machine ↯

ummsbiaus & Difference Machine
Neodvorot

Release date: 20.09.2024
Genre: electronica

The circular motions of life – every new iteration is a familiar path. Like turning a corner in a maze, only to be faced with more of the same. With no chance of escape. Every stage without novelty, only the distortion of time, only the familiar vortex of modernity, far from home.

The concept of “hometown”: is it a bustling city with smiling faces? Or is it empty streets and ruined houses? Is it possible to catch a train and be there overnight? Or maybe there’s nowhere to return to, and this place has become a myth. This concept is of a home that can be both physically destroyed and psychologically distorted.

“Neodvorot” is a neologism that can be interpreted in different ways: as a point of no return; as the inevitability of neo-destiny; or as the inability to detach from modern realities.

This EP features 3 songs written by ummsbiaus & Difference Machine, featuring lyrics by ummsbiaus, dedicated to her home city of Kyïv, combined with poetry by Lesia Ukraïnka.

This release was created in between daily rolling blackouts in Kyïv, at a time when regular russian attacks are continuously damaging Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and killing people.

на півшляху від витоку до краю

Release date: 28.06.2024
Genre: experimental folk

An experimental-folk journey that blends traditional Ukrainian music with a free-form performative approach. This is the first album from the collaboration between ummsbiaus and Difference Machine.

The story of the album’s creation began with a recording session the two artists held with Ukrainian folk musician and current military medic Eduard Drach in his Kyïv apartment in October 2023, during which they recorded 2 hours worth of various traditional Ukrainian instruments. With Eduard, they recorded samples of buhai, kobza, kolisna lira, violin, and vocals.

From there, ummsbiaus and Difference Machine created songs out of these sounds, adding more instruments and vocals, but with the basis always lying in Ukrainian folk music. This album incorporates lyrics, melodies, and motifs from traditional songs. Lyrics from folk songs are interwoven with original poetry written by ummsbiaus.

ENERHOMOR SUITE

SLUKH media:

“After last year's eerie album Enerhomor, ummsbiaus returns with its second part - her own, no less eerie, radio of memories. The artist again holds the listener in a tight embrace, and makes you feel tension all over your body. Every sound immobilises - if you move, you might come across a bare wire ready to shock you.

Enerhomor Suite No. 2, Op. 5 is a reinterpretation of artist’s old self a year after the release of Enerhomor, which no longer reflects the current personality of ummsbiaus”.

A Closer LIsten:

The new EP, like its predecessor, is rife not only with industrial music, but the music of industry.  Sound sources, whether they be note or current, face destruction and sputter back.  Signals vanish and reappear.  When power is cut to one portion of the EP, it is restored in another.  In this way, the artist paints a sonic picture of a nation that keeps getting pounded and rises again and again to its feet.  Even the cover figure is dark, shrouded in mystery, but undeniably there.

SNOVYDA SUITE

Snovyda Suite No. 1, Op. 4
Label: Mystictrax

Best EP 2023 (SLUKH media):

“In four tracks, ummsbiaus explores the world of dreams and its various phases. The suite lulls you to sleep with its dense sound and atmosphere of slumber - the EP shows how reverent electronic music can be”.

ummsbiaus experimented for a long time with the very perception of sound in a pre-sleep state in order to convey a ‘specific distortion of sounds’, as when you fall asleep to music, and remember it. She adds that this effect is especially noticeable when switching from the fourth movement to the first”. – Neformat.ua

“This electronic suite is filled with the atmosphere of eerie visions. The four tracks explore the otherworldly realm of dreams. ummsbiaus divided it into separate cycles: Hypnagogia, Sleepwalking, Lullaby, and Nightmare. According to all the rules of a musical suite, the Snovyda Suite No. 1, Op. 4 is locked in a magical sound, but there is a tangible progression from a calm and slow beginning to a bizarre and disturbing end”. – SLUKH media

SPADOK BY GASOLINE RADIO

Spovid Matioly (Confession of Matthiola) is a part of Spadok compilation and fully consists of folk samples recorded by Gasoline Radio team in the Carpathians. It is a story about selflessness, the pain of hope and waiting for something that has long been meaningless. It is the story of a flower that will never become a part of the flora in which it accidentally finds itself. And this otherness makes it lonely. Its purple bloom embroiders the mountain and pleases the eye, but it still never fits in.

KAKHOVKA HPP

A sound performance telling a story of Kakhovka dam recklessly blown up by felonious occupants causing one of the biggest ecological catastrophes on the territory of Europe over the recent decades. This piece is trying to immerse you into a macabre soundscape just a few minutes before this unprecedented terrorist act on June 6.
